Angels on Sunset Boulevard Melissa de la Cruz Books Reviews

TAP, The Angels of Practice, is all everyone can talk about. This website/drink/drug is intoxicating and no one can get enough of it. No one can explain what TAP really is, since it is all around them and they are so dependent on it. The company that owns it holds the most exclusive parties, grants everyone's material wishes, provides all the gossip and promotes the biggest rock star that everyone loves, Johnny Silver.

But then strange things begin to happen. Kids all over Sunset Boulevard are beginning to disappear, including Johnny Silver. No one knows why this is happening, and others are too busy with TAP to worry about what is going on. Everyone except for Nick and Taj, who are the only ones that don't buy into the whole TAP industry.

Before they know it, Taj and Nick find themselves together, trying to solve the mystery of what is happening and even developing a strong relationship with each other. Unfortunately, it may be too late for them to actually do anything about it.

Told through Nick and Taj's points of view, Melissa de la Cruz takes us into a world that is far from The Au Pairs. ANGELS ON SUNSET BOULEVARD captures the reader from the very first page with its unusual uniqueness. Each character brings a certain atmosphere that captivates the audience into wanting more. The reader becomes so involved in the story that they will soon become disappointed when the book has to end.

Now the only thing left to do is wait for the next novel, which may be a long wait (well, for me that is).

Ugh! Let's see, I first opened this book and began reading it in hmm October, I think. It is now Mid-January and I forced myself to finish it. I hate to give up on a book, but I almost wish I would have.

The concept behind the book is good and original. TAP, or The Angels Practice is a Facebook/My Space type website with a twist. It is more like a cult, just for teens and young people. One of the biggest parts of TAP are the parties where a special narcotic/hallucinogenic drink is served to free them of their inhibitions among other things. Like I said, I thought it was very original, I just wish it played out better.

The author, Melissa de la Cruz has written some very well-liked books, including, but not limited to her Blue Bloods series about vampires. The writing in itself was good, descriptive, and easy-to-read. Somewhere after the first couple of chapters it just got painfully boring for me to read. There is a bit of mystery involving a missing rock star and some random missing kids, but I just didn't care. The characters who went missing weren't major and I had no connection with them.

The most disappointing thing for me was the ending. It just fell flat. It seemed rushed and frantic and then just ended. I felt there were so many loose ends that were just left. I would have liked some things played out a bit more and explained. We found some things out about Taj, the main female character, but it was all so rushed. I would have liked to know more about what she was thinking and why certain things happened. I don't want to reveal too much, so I will leave it at that.

Overall, good concept but poorly executed. I have not turned off of this author completely though. I have heard good things about many of her other books. Although, some people who reviewed this book loved it. Hmmm...whatever floats your boat I guess. This just wasn't for me.

I do not know what to think about this book. I decided to read Angels on Sunset Boulevard for the following reasons
It was written by Melissa De La Cruz.
The cover caught my attention. The colors are vibrant and the girl in the cover looks like someone with a mind of her own, as someone who sets its own guidelines.

After reading this book, I can say I am 50% satisfied. The first part of the book is slow, it is rather introductory, you get to know the characters superficially. We see Taj and Johnny as the iconic couple, the talented musical prodigy and the girl who makes her own style (a trend setter) accompanying him. She seems tired of that environment and indifferent to all of it. We also know Nick, the preppy boy who practices sports, drinks too many energy drinks and who is accompanied by the popular girl at school. All have something in common, they belong to a social network called TAP.

The story continues its slow progress and gradually we discover that what seems like part of a social life has hidden secret practices similar to those of a cult type movement where people search for social supremacy. Nick is the character that moves the gears needed to discover the secrets, is the character who tries to break the social norm governed by this network called TAP. The Angels Practice, or TAP sought to generate a sense of necessity in the story, the need to be part of an elite club.

The story is slow, but when I reached approximately half of the book, it come out of its lethargy. Events begin to occur and you see a darker side to the story. Finally I could develop interest on my reading.

About the Book
The idea of exclusivity was embellished with ideas of spirituality and freedom when in fact, sought to enslave and trap. I found interesting the development of the concept of the social network. The human being is a social being and social networks are a channel to develop different levels of interaction. In this book the interaction the characters developed in this network becomes detrimental. It also discusses the concept of ownership of objects to develop a sense of belonging.

I feel a bit disappointed with this book. I like what De La Cruz writes, but this was not a home run. My level of satisfaction reached a 50% thanks to the second half of book. The author used too many fragmented sentences, this makes the dialog to lose meaning and significance.

On the other hand, I liked the images, the pages of the characters, this gives a better sense of what is TAP and who the characters are and what are their priorities in life.

Do I liked the characters?

Taj was a disappointment. I thought it would be the independent character, but she sets trends just waiting to be followed. She is simply the character that excuses the mundane with spiritual explanations.
Johnny is a character that is forgotten.
Nick is the one who questions, so I liked him.
This book was an adventure but it fell flat at the end when it left it at a cliff hanger. I didn't personally enjoy the ending, because I still want to know what happens next.
I love the author. i ordered this book and read it and i loved it! i wish there was a sequel T___T
