The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree is a gorgeously crafted tale steeped in the culture of Appalachia and the magic of Christmas. My mother used to read this book aloud every holiday season and she couldn't make it through without crying and I didn't understand it until I became a mother myself. I now read the same worn copy to my own boys, 3 and 5, who love to hear the story of little Ruthie with her coal-black curls, but side-eye their mother warily as I sob my way through the words with tears streaming down my face. It's just so good. The story embodies the spirit of love, the sacrifices we make as mothers and fathers, and the hard-won life of homesteaders during the Great War. This book tops our holiday collection. I couldn't recommend it more.

This is a lovely book to read to your children and grandchildren at Christmas. Not only is the story charming, but the pictures are bright and sharp, and represent an older, and perhaps a more serene time. As a teacher I read this to my students (Before that became discouraged) and they were always at full attention. Barbara Cooney is a unique, and excellent artist, and in this case, a picture is worth 1000 words. I highly recommend this book.
Paperback, a little lengthy for really small children. Nice story.
Yes...an amazing christmas story. This is how christmas stories should be. They stay with you. Meaningful. Touching. Gifts from the heart. I bought a lot of christmas books but only some of them did I find meaningful and beautiful. This one is a keeper.
This is another gentle Christmas story that centers around giving, not receiving. Like Christmas in the Country, it is placed in a quieter time and in a quiet country setting. If I could choose only 10 Christmas books, this would make the cut; if I could choose only one, I would choose The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey.
"The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree An Appalachian Story" by Gloria Houston and Illustrated by Barbara Cooney is just that, a wonderful, heartwarming story. Perfect for all children, and adults who still believe in the magic of the season, like myself. Wonderfully illustrated by Ms. Cooney.
This is my hands down favorite Christmas book, and I am a Montessori teacher with a LOVE of children's books! I love Barbara Cooney, the story, the veracity, and the message. If you like learning what holidays were like before we all had credit cards...set in Appalachia, in the 20s.
I really loved this story. The pictures are beautiful and the mom's devotion was so moving. The only part that I raised an eyebrow to was when they mentioned St. Nicholas handing out willow switches to children who "misbehaved." It also doesn't really have a traditional Santa so it may have your children asking what happened to Santa. It's certainly a worthwhile story to own and read but just be prepared for questions related to these two topics when you read it.
